この歌を聞くたびに、この歌を歌わせればプロ並みだった我が亡き父（新潟県出身；明治36年〜昭和60年）を
想い出す。父は民謡はたいてい好きだったが、特にこの歌が好きで、得意だった。まだ私が幼なかった頃、よく
家族の前でこれを歌った。そんなわけで、私もこれが大好きになった。威勢もよいが、同時に北の海の厳しさや
漁の辛さ、哀愁を感じさせる歌でもある。この英訳はそんな我が亡き父の鎮魂のためでもある。


(前唄)
国を離れて　蝦夷地（えぞち）が島に　ヤンサノエー
幾夜（いくよ）寝ざめの　波まくら
朝な夕なに　聞こゆるものはネー
友呼ぶ鴎（かもめ）と　波の音

Leaving my hometown to go to the Yezo, Yo-heave-ho!
How many nights and days did I spend on my sea voyage?
In the morning and evening the only thing I could hear
Was the piping of sea-gulls for friends and the sound of waves

(本唄)
鴎の啼く音（ね）に　ふと目を覚まし
あれが蝦夷地の　山かいな

I happened to wake up at the cry of the sea-gulls
And wondered if the land I saw was the Yezo

(後唄)
月をかすめて　千鳥が鳴けばネー
波もむせぶか　蝦夷の海

Hearing the plovers, chirping across the moon, Yo-ho!
The rough waves sounded sorrowful in the Yezo sea
